local.ch is carbon neutral!

local.ch became the first Swiss Internet platform to be completely carbon neutral.

Over the last months we did all the necessary internal appraisals to assess our carbon footprint. Not an easy exercise. We asked questions that nobody asked ever before. Example? “What is the total energy consumption of the building we are in”. “What is the electricity consumption of our hosting center”.

After quite some investigative work we could estimate our carbon footprint to be an estimated 50 tons for 2007 and roughly 52-53 for 2008. This includes emissions ranging from administration, platform development & operations, sales, marketing & production, as well as transportation (business traffic and commutes), etc. Not surprisingly our top polluting activity is actually our office space. We are a person bound company not producing physical goods.

We bought the equivalent carbon compensation from myClimate. As a Switzerland oriented company we bought into compensation projects here in Switzerland.

so you can set your “system boundary” even further (and my environmental engineering degree definitively shines through now :))
